| shurie's Full Review: Sabatier Precision 14-Piece Stainless Steel Knife ... |
Having owned and used The Sabatier 14 piece knife block set for the past two years, I can confidently recommend it as an excellent bargain. When you purchase a knife set in this price range you usually get cheap plastic handles, short tangs that dont go the full length of the handle, poor quality steel that doesnt hold an edge well, and knives that are prone to rust. Sabatier has somehow managed to put together a quality set of knives at a price that is less than youd usually pay for just one good quality knife.
According to Sabatier, you get:
* Full tang, triple rivet handle construction; over-molded polymer handles for strength and balance
* Knives included: 8" chef, 8" slicer/utility, 8" bread, 6" utility, 3-1/2" paring
* 8" sharpening steel, kitchen shears, and six 5" steak knives in a 14 slot wood block
* High carbon blade resists erosion and is razor sharp
Well, razor sharp may be a bit of an exaggeration, but the knives did arrive reasonably sharp and hold their edge well. The chefs knife holds an edge as well as a very expensive chefs knife that I own. The only difference between the two is the Sabatier is lighter than the expensive chefs knife which is an advantage when you are chopping a large quantity of food.
Perhaps the most useful tool in the set is the kitchen shear. I use it constantly both in and out of the kitchen. After two years of constant use it has retained a crisp edge and has not become loose like some other shears. It has a bottle opener built into one of the blades, but an even more useful feature is the serrated bottle top gripper. This bottle top gripper is an excellent tool for loosening tight screw-on tops on bottles the size of a vinegar or ketchup bottle. It gives you considerable leverage and makes quick work of a stubborn bottle top.
Each knife in the set has good balance and feels comfortable in the hand. Of note is the paring knife, which is shorter and stouter than most paring knives. I have several paring knives in the drawer, but I havent touched any of them since I got this set. The paring knife inspires confidence with its strength and ease of use.
The sharpening steel that comes with the set is good for a quick tune-up but should not be confused with a true knife-sharpening tool. As with any knife set, a good sharpening routine makes the difference between knives that are just okay and knives that are a joy to use. Fortunately this set is made of steel that will hold an edge reasonably well.
The wooden block that comes with the set is nicely finished and has real rubber feet, unlike many cheap sets which have stick-on felt pads that come off sooner or later.
If you are looking for an excellent bargain in a knife set, you cant go wrong with the Sabatier 14 piece set. It may not grace the counter top of an expensive gourmet kitchen, but it is easy on the budget and will ably serve you and your family for many years to come.
